FT Tech Tonic Talks to the Open Data Institute

The Financial Times’ Tech Tonic podcast talked with Jeni Tennison, a researcher in AI whose work focuses on the best practice for the use and sharing of data and CEO of the Open Data Institute (ODI).

During their 30 minute chat they touch on:

- Data as a vital form of infrastructure that we rely on to accelerate our ability to make better decisions, innovate, create better products and services, and fuel growth and productivity.

- Why it is vital for organisations to develop processes and procedures that consider the ethical implications, risks and impacts of collecting, storing, sharing and using data, especially where those data activities have the potential to impact on individuals and society.

- The importance of transparency and open data in unlocking value and efficiencies for both individual organisations, society as a whole and our economy, and of ensuring equitable access to data, so the benefits of big data accrue evenly.

- The future of legal and regulatory frameworks around personal, public and privately owned data, especially in light of high profile scandals, trends towards consumer mistrust of institutions and public-private partnerships around large data projects.

The ODI was founded in 2012 by the inventor of the web Sir Tim Berners-Lee and artificial intelligence expert Sir Nigel Shadbolt to show the value of open data, and to advocate for the innovative use of open data to affect positive change across the globe. It works with companies and governments to build an open, trustworthy data ecosystem, where people can make better decisions using data and manage any harmful impacts.
